"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" : A Review

Today I will be reviewing the recent British film, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy“ based on the famous novel of the same name by John le CarrĂ©. I saw the movie about a month or so ago with a some friends after weeks of anticipation, after seeing the trailer sometime in November or December. Upon first viewing the trailer for the film I fell love with the movie and it’s premise and most of my thought was on seeing it. To me it looked like an awesome spy movie with plenty of mystery and some action, I knew it most likely was not going to be a James Bond movie.; but I liked the Cold War Setting of the film. I think also the music in the trailer attracted me to movie, in fact that happens to me on many occasions. Over all excited to see this movie, the anticipation hoping to see it in December only for it have a limited and had to wait till mid january until it finally came to a theater near me.

After finally getting to see the film, if I had to give the movie a grade I would probably give the movie somewhere around a C+ or a B-, because while I like the story and the characters, I felt way to overwhelmed and a bit confused. I think while writing the script for the film, they forgot an essential part of translating a book to film, not everything from the book needs to be put in the movie. I came out of the theater disappointed, not angry like when I saw “Skyline” (worst piece of shit I have ever seen), but I was hoping for a bit more action and not to come out confused. The acting in the film was good, but came out overwhelmed by the amount of information thrown at the audience and the non linear plot, they really need something to indicate when it went it to a flash back. One thing the movie did very well, however, was keep the mystery a mystery, though it didn’t keep you on the edge of your feet, it is something very few movies today.

Overall, despite being somewhat disappointed with the film, I would have to say that it is a decent movie. It is definitely not meant for everyone, but would most likely appeal to fans of spy movies and novels, as well as fans of the book. The plot was good, but could have used more action and tension. I would see the movie again, and hopefully better understand what is going on. Excellent cast, good directing, and was a accurate period piece. If the movie interests you, definitely go and see it.
